The 2008 season got off to a shaky start for Hillcrest High’s 1st XV with some of the boys getting injured. But after a dose of concrete pills, the boys came together to produce some good form against Hamilton Boys’ High 4th XV. Playing a home game to a supportive Wednesday afternoon crowd, Hilly won the game convincingly.

Buoyed by their fine win, the boys were ready to tackle St Paul’s 2nd XV last Saturday. They put in a sterling effort and were a dominant force for most of the game. But two late tries to St Paul’s allowed them to take the win and the final score didn’t really reflect how close the game was. There was solid work by the Hillcrest forwards, while the backs combined with some good play. Man-of-the-match, Arno Bekker, put in a big performance wearing the number 7 jersey and has the battle scars to prove it.

It has been a challenging season for the under 16s so far. The boys have faced some very well organized opposition and although they have put up their best effort it has unfortunately not been enough to secure a win to date. There has been a regular band of supporters follow the boys and we thank them for this, it is greatly appreciated.

Today Hillcrest’s first XV played St Paul’s second XV who are top of the table. The boys put on a good game - clawing for every meter and protecting the ball well. They played the best game of the season and proved to themselves that they are worth the jerseys they wear. The backline’s boot managed to keep the boys in St Paul’s half for a good portion of the game. The backline managed to pick up their game from previous weeks and came up with some stunning runs! The forwards also did their part in putting pressure on the St. Paul’s backline and forward pack with some good counter rucking and steals at the breakdown. The backs and forwards managed to put on some good tackles with tackler of the day going to Bryce Johnson. Although it was a loss, it was a spectacular game and the boys can hold their heads up high.

Welcome to the first report about the Hillcrest High School Under 15 Rugby Team.

The future success of Hillcrest High rugby is assured, if you look at the skill level of some of the players in this team. From a solid and competitive front row all the way through to a speedy backline we have players of immense talent including:

Te Ra Rimaha has the build, strength and more importantly the technique to be an outstanding prop forward. His speed around the paddock often amazes the opposition, and many times he is the first player to the breakdown.

Jake Henderson plays like the energizer bunny. He just never stops. Jake’s ability to play in different positions makes him an invaluable team member.

Robbie Mason is big and strong with speed to burn, and I believe he is one of the best lock forwards playing at this level.

Taurua Reti is a visionary rugby player. Playing at 1st 5/8th he runs the backline to perfection.

I believe Dylan Griffin is one of the hardest tackling and running 2nd 5/8ths in our competition. Many an opposition player has found out that the tall lean Hillcrest number 12 can tackle very well.

Jerry Stensness is one of those gifted players who seem to have all the time in the world. One of the safest fullbacks around, Jerry gives the rest of the team plenty of confidence as the last line of defense.

No team is complete without a good on field leader and the Hillcrest High under 15’s have, in Chris Johnston, one such leader. A fearless tackler Chris has yet to be out played in the flanker position.

These boys make up a small part of the team and as our season progresses this great bunch of rugby players are developing into a very tight group, and as long as they continue playing rugby Hillcrest High will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Thank You

Gordon Griffin.
